Active Scanning

Active Scanning expands the Signature Resolution System by giving Riders direct control over how they gather information in space. Instead of relying entirely on passive detection, players can now actively focus their sensors toward specific areas to accelerate signature resolution.

The system transforms reconnaissance into an intentional gameplay mechanic, introducing a balance between faster intel gathering and increased exposure.

Focused Reconnaissance

Active Scanning puts the controls directly in your hands, turning detection into a deliberate aim-and-fire mechanic.

The Inputs:

  • Z: Enter Scanning Mode. Your camera position dictates the reticule direction.

  • LMB (Hold): Spools the scanner.

  • Space: Fires the focused pulse.

The Gameplay Loop: Entities caught in the pulse cone gain rapid signature resolution, significantly faster than passive observation. You control the vector and the timing, turning intel gathering into a tactical choice: choose your sector, time your pulse, and trade stealth for speed.

This introduces a more deliberate form of detection gameplay:

  • Choose where to scan

  • Decide when to gather information

  • Trade stealth for faster resolution

Risk & Exposure: The Cost of Intel

Active Scanning is a double-edged sword. While it grants accelerated detection, it comes with a critical drawback: Signature Bloom.

Every pulse you fire temporarily expands your own ship’s signature, making you significantly easier to detect and resolve on enemy sensors. Aggressive scanning might reveal hidden threats, but it effectively paints a target on your back. You are trading stealth for speed.

Resolution Mechanics: Acceleration, Not Automation

It is important to note that Active Scanning is not an "instant lock" mechanic.

Landing a pulse only advances signature clarity; it does not always fully resolve the target. You still need to maintain observation, manage positioning, and sometimes commit to follow-up scans to get a positive ID. The system speeds up the process, but it doesn't do the flying for you.
